theatre

humorous & dramatic interpretation

Interp. allows you to choose a published piece -- a play, a novel, a short story, an autobiography, etc. -- and to use your acting skills to interpret the key theme(s) you want to express in the piece. The 10-minute performance is memorized, and you write an original introduction to introduce the theme and your piece.

duo & duet interpretation

Duo interp. follows the same rules as HI and DI, but you present your piece with a partner. Duet interp. is only performed at the MSHSAA Districts and State tournaments. The rules are slightly different, and permit the use of a table and chairs.

prose & poetry reading

Prose and poetry reading are events in which you can choose either a piece of prose or a selection of poetry to convey a theme to your audience. You use a binder during your 8-minute performance and are limited in your movements, so you use facial expressions, gestures, and your voice to make the audience understand your interpretation. Like all interp. events, you write an original introduction to explain your theme and introduce your piece(s).

program of oral interpretation

POI is a new event. Like prose and poetry, you use a binder during your performance, but you are not limited to one genre of literature. You must create a mash-up of drama, prose, and poetry around a theme that you select. Your performance is 10-minutes, including your introduction.

storytelling

Storytelling is a fun event. You retell a children's story as if your audience is a group of children. Note that, unlike most video performances you find online, MSHSAA rules require you to be seated in a chair for your entire performance.

readers' theater

Readers' Theatre is like a group POI. It is a really cool event that is only offered at the MSHSAA Districts and State tournaments. If you are interested in directing a readers' theatre, see Ms. Raymond!

one act plays

Like readers' theatre, One Act Plays are only offered at MSHSAA Districts and State. It is great experience for aspiring actors and directors. If you want to direct a one act, see Ms. Raymond!
